IMMERSION

Immersion is an award-winning interactive 3D virtual underwater installation created under the direction of Angela Barnett, in collaboration with Andrew Buchanan, Darren Ballingall, Christian Rubino, and Chris MacKellar. This immersive digital artwork invites audiences to explore a vibrant virtual ocean environment where movement brings the scene to life. As participants shift within the projection space, they engage directly with digital sea creatures, becoming enveloped in light, sound, and motion.

Blending digital media art, interactive technology, and immersive installation design, Immersion transforms physical movement into an expressive dialogue with a virtual marine world. The work reflects the creative vision of Angela Barnett and her team, combining technical innovation with poetic, sensory experience.

Commissioned by Experimenta for The Experimenta Playground: International Biennial of Media Art (2007–2009), Immersion has been exhibited at major cultural venues including the National Gallery of Victoria and BlackBox Gallery in Melbourne (2007), Carriageworks Performance Space in Sydney (2008), the Samstag Museum of Art in Adelaide (2008), and Sculpture Square in Singapore as part of the International Symposium of Electronic Art (ISEA) (2008).

Recognised for its innovation in interactive installation art and virtual reality experience design, Immersion received the 2008 ATOM Enhanced TV and Entertainment Award for Best Multimedia.
